The Affordable OpenVMS License proposal is geared mostly toward the Small Office / Home Office (end) user. For ISVs (Independent Software Vendors), Digital had the "A.S.A.P." (Association of Software Application Partners) program and Compaq had the C.S.A. (Compaq Solutions Alliance) program. However, neither program adequately addressed the needs of the small, independent software developer without a large, active and vital end-user market.
The Affordable OpenVMS License proposal is designed to lay the groundwork for the end-user market which will bring to fruition the goals of the HP I.S.V. program (name TBD), and those of its predecessor, the A.S.A.P. and C.S.A. programs. By bringing license pricing for OpenVMS into line with retail pricing for Win/NT and commercial UN*X (both Digital UNIX / Tru64 and third party options), the opportunity is created to sell small Alpha systems, Small IPF systems (and, for the present at least, small used VAX systems) running OpenVMS into the end-user market at prices which are competitive and which will foster growth in that market which will provide a larger, more vital and therefore more profitable (to HP and the ISVs) group of ISVs developing applications for OpenVMS.
