@CLS@ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Bulletin # 6 What Is Shareware? Updated: 04/07/94 | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The "Shareware" concept is an honor system under which you, by using a program designated as Shareware, agree to try out the program for a limited period, usually 30 to 45 days or so. After that, you agree to either pay a nominal registation fee, usually less than $100, or stop using the program, and remove it from your computer's hard disk and destroy any copies in your possession. Yes, friends, Shareware is Copyrighted software and, Yes, the Copyright laws are enforced - vigorously! - by the U.S. Government. So, you're on your honor to abide by the license agreement included in the distribution package of a shareware program. The penalties can be severe! Typically, shareware programs may be distributed freely. However, take that word - freely - very literally: you may not charge money for copies of shareware programs (unless you are a registered commercial distributor and inform the author that you are distributing copies of their program). Normally, a minimal fee to cover the cost of media and copying, usually $10 (U.S. dollars) or less, is the most you can charge. However, check the license agreement for each shareware program because some do not allow even the media and replication charges! Most shareware authors encourage you to pass their program around by uploading it to bulletin board systems (like this one) who don't already have it. Check the BBS's file areas to see if they already have a copy of it before you spend your telephone time dollars to upload it. ---------------------------- End of Bulletin ------------------------------ ===========================================================================
