--------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Bulletin # 14 Hobbyist / Freeware To-do List Updated: 03/17/98 | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's list of ideas for hobbyist projects and freeware development for OpenVMS, FreeBSD, DOS, etc. Feel free to submit your suggestions to the Sysop! FreeVMS Utilities One of the keenest needs of the FreeVMS Project is people to code up the command programs which are external to DCL. These include, among others, COPY.EXE (COPY, APPEND), CREATE.EXE, CREATEFDL.EXE, DELETE.EXE, DIRECTORY.EXE, etc. You can find the .CLD files for any VMS distribution in the .A saveset. The DCL internal commands are found in DCLINT.CLD, which also makes mention of QUEMAN and other programs. See the FreeVMS homesite at http://www.free-vms.org/ for more info. SCSI ZIP-drive driver for OpenVMS For those folks who need removable storage for OpenVMS, how 'bout a suitable driver for SCSI ZIP drives on OpenVMS? The second step of that would, of course, be to get the spec.'s from Iomega and write some "ZIP tools" for OpenVMS, or perhaps even port their software to OpenVMS (if your OpenVMS license permits you to develop software for profit, since it is unlikely that Iomega will release their code as freeware - then again, I could be wrong!). Update CMU/IP for Changes in the RFC's, Re-Write for IPV6 Rather a tall order, eh? Well, MACRO32 always was a freebie with VAX/VMS and OpenVMS-VAX. BLISS/32-VAX is a freebie now, too! Portions of CMU/IP may be in C, but Gnu-C is available for both VAX and Alpha. Those should be everything you need to modify any portion of CMU/IP. Anybody feel up to the challenge? Re-package Gnu-C for VMSINSTAL There are some binary distributions for Gnu-C out there. We need an object-code distribution that can be linked on the target system. Much of the stuff you find on Hunter Goatley's freeware site is packed this way. Re-package Samba for VMSINSTAL. Same comments as for Gnu-C. Samba is distributed in source-code form by its maintainers. However, on at least one German site, you can find an object-code distribution that requires DEC-C. Normally, Samba is built using Gnu-C (GCC/G++) on UNIX systems. We need of port of Samba for OpenVMS using the Gnu-C compilers for VAX and Alpha. FYI: Samba allows your OpenVMS system to offer print and file services to Windows, WIN/95 and WIN/NT clients. Samba is freeware. The client- side software is a freebie from MS for Windows, and comes with WIN/95 and WIN/NT Wrkstn. Port ANYone's DEC-BASIC to C Translator to OpenVMS There's a freeware B-2-C translator out there (BTRAN), but to my knowledge, it's not complete and is for UNIX, not OpenVMS. This needs to be polished up and made compatible with Gnu-C.
